Year 3 - Windrush Generation

Year 3 have had a brilliant afternoon learning about the Windrush. The Windrush generation refers to the immigrants who were invited to the UK between 1948 and 1971 from Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados to help rebuild Britain post-war. The name comes from the ship MV Empire Windrush, which on June 22, 1948, docked in Tilbury, Essex, bringing nearly 500 Jamaicans to the UK.

There were a lot of interesting questions that came up during carpet time discussion. We were very impressed with how much they learned in just one lesson!

Here are some of the questions we were curious to answer:

  1. What food did they eat when they reached London?
  2. Did they leave their families behind?
  3. How did they cope with the cold weather in England?
  4. Were they given free houses?
  5. Were they treated fairly?

Do you know the answers to the questions? Comment below!
