Year 3 - Mapping Skills Day

Year 3 immersed themselves into the world of maps. Firstly, they helped some pirates to find their missing treasure by building and then using their knowledge of grid references and coordinates. They then worked together to identify symbols that are used on maps, leading to an interesting discussion about why symbols are used in maps at all. Afterwards, they had free time to look at an atlas and share anything they found interesting. Most were surprised by how tiny the UK is in comparison to other countries, especially Russia! They were also excited to find names of places that they have visited before on the maps. We ended our Mapping Skills Day by creating a 3D map of an aerial view of Daubeney using Lego. Can you identify any parts of the school in their Lego maps? Year 3 are now armed with the resources of geographical language and knowledge that they can use throughout their topic lessons this term.
